The Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships 2022 was held in Dubai, UAE from the 2nd April to 10 April 2022.




We have 4 SGF fencers who qualified to represent their country at the world stage:


Coach Samson and Coach Cheryl was also part of the Singapore Contingent of National Partner Coaches there to guide our fencers.


It was certainly enriching for our fencers! Most of them were debutants at the World Junior and Cadet Championships! Competing among the World’s Best in Dubai.


Representing Singapore in the Junior Women’s Épée Individual, Zi Cheng won 3 bouts in pools and progressed into the Direct Elimination Round. She won her round of 128 (15-10) before finishing 57th overall!




Representing Hong Kong in the Cadet & Junior Men’s Épée Event, Julien won 4 bouts in his pools for Juniors, and progressed into the Direct Elimination round. He earned a bye through the round of 256 into 128, where he won a convincing 15-8. Julien continued his good form in the round of 64, winning 15-13 to earn himself a place in the Top 32, where he finished 26th overall for Juniors!


In the Cadet Event, Julien won 2 bouts in his pools to progress into the round of 128, where he finished 105th overall.




Representing Phillipines in the Junior Women’s Épée Event, Samantha won 2 of her bouts in pools, before finishing 126th overall.




Representing Singapore in the Cadet Men’s Epee event we have 15 year old Matthew, who finished 135th overall.




What an experience for our fencers, let’s put what we’ve learnt from this competition into our preparation for the next season, and strive to come back even stronger!


The Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2022 was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from the 24th of February till the 3rd of March of 2022. The 2020 and 2021 edition of this Major Competition was cancelled due to Covid-19, and we are excited that it has resumed this year!




In the Cadet (Under 17) Women's Épée Individual Event, from SGF we have 17 year old Choong Zi Cheng and 16 year old Denise Seah, both girls qualified and will be representing Singapore.



This was both our girls' first time at a Major Competition. 31 fencers from 10 different countries participated in the Cadet Women's Épée Individual Event.


Zi Cheng won 4 out of 5 bouts in her pools. Her wins were over Toktogulova Aysuluu from Kyrgyzstan 5-1, Saikhom Nelcyrose Devi from India 5-2, Naranbaatar Yalguun from Mongolia 5-1 and Almiri Dhay from Saudi Arabia 5-3. She lost to Murzataeva Dilnaz from Uzbekistan 4-5.


Denise won Tserenpuntsag Tsogtsetsen from Mongolia 5-4, and lost to Lohan Prachi from India 3-5, Lai Hiu Tung from Hong Kong 1-2, Fomina Katrina from Kazakhstan 2-5 and Atabaeva Perizat from Uzbekistan 0-5.



Both Zi Cheng and Denise advanced into the Direct Elimination round. In the Table of 32, Denise was up against seeded 7 Kair Govindnoor from India. Focused and clear, she fenced an intense and nail biting bout, narrowly missing out to progress into the next round with a 14-15 match.


Zi Cheng earned a bye into the Table of 16, where she met Saikhom Nelcyrose Devi from India again. Calm and composed, she won the bout 15-12 to progress into the Quarter-Finals. In the Top 8, Zi Cheng was up against seeded 3 Zuvaydilloyeva from Uzbekistan, she was focused and earned her place in the Top 4 with a 15-11 win.


In the Semi-Finals she was set to fence Lohan Prachi from India, the bout was tight till the end, where Zi Cheng showed who was in better form by pulling off to finish with a 15-13 win, making history to be the first Women's Epee Cadet from Singapore to make it to the finals in the Asian Cadet Fencing Championships. Where she won the Historic Silver for Singapore!

In the Cadet (Under 17) Men's Épée Individual Event, from SGF we have 16 year old Julien Kenneth Lim who qualified and will be representing Hong Kong, and 15 year old Matthew Pang who qualified and will be representing Singapore. This was both of our boys first time at a Major Competition.


47 fencers from 17 different countries participated in the Cadet Men's Épée Individual Event.


Matthew won 2 out 6 bouts in his pools. Winning Samizoda Nazirmad from Tajikistan 5-2 and Hazazi Ahmed from Saudi Arabia 5-2. Losing to Huynh Gia Huy from Vietnam 1-5, Kamalov Ruslan from Kyrgyzstan 1-5, Keskes Ahmed from Oman 4-5 and Tinnikov Georgiy from Kazakhstan 0-5.


Julien won 4 out of 6 bouts in his pools. Victories over Bobokhonov Nazar from Tajikistan 5-1, Al Fadaaq Jaber from Qatar 5-3, Mirshafiei Seyed Mohammad from Iran 5-2 and Vemani Lokesh from India 5-4. His 2 losses were to Mustafin Gabidin from Kazakhstan 3-5 and Timurov Meyirkhan from Kazakhstan 2-5.


Matthew and Julien both advanced into the Direct Elimination round.


In the Table of 64, Matthew fenced off with Kanggabam Kane Singh from India, and finished 38th overall after a 11-15 bout.


Julien earned a bye into the Table of 32, where he fenced with Hazazi Ahmed from Saudi Arabia, winning 15-10 and progressing into the Table of 16. In the Table of 16 he was faced with seeded 2 Kamalov Ruslan from Kyrgyzstan, Julien fenced fearlessly and earned his place in the Top 8 with a well fought 15-13 bout. Next up was Almheiri Masoud from United Arab Emirates, focused and clear, Julien breezed through with a 15-9 win to earn himself a place in the Semi Finals, where he eventually won the Bronze Medal for Cadet Men's Epee Individual in the Asian Junior & Cadet Fencing Championships 2022!
